I have had a Dyson animal for 8 years and I loved it. I gave it to my son. I bought the Dyson Ball because it is lighter for me. In my opinion it is the only vacume to buy. It rolls over my hard wood floors and carpets. It is light enough for me. It is about time someone made a vacume that does not loose suction and you don't have to replace every year or two. Yes, it is pricy. But you will NEVER buy another vacume again. As I said, I gave my 8 year old one to my son. It is still going strong. You will not be sorry you bought this. The way I found Dyson is...I was moving. I had white burber carpets and I vacumed them when I was leaving. My friend brought her Dyson to help me. she said did you vacume? Yes, I said. well watch this. She vacumed the floor I had just done and all the junk she picked up I could not beleive!!!!...Dyson DC24 Upright Vacuum Cleaner

Honestly I could never say enough good things about our Dyson. My partner and I have two small dogs, which we love. These dogs shed like no other. Well with the normal daily chore proccess of sweeping up a days worth of "playtime" hair from our wood floors. Doorbells rings and in came the Dyson. I started to pant as I was so excited. Remember I just swept, mind you I am a professional from long years of chores as a kid. Well I started up the that graceful machine and in a mere ten minutes, I had a half canister of dog hair from three rooms. SHOCKED. That is all. I am totally in love and I am never cheating, ever! Scouts honor!....Dyson DC33 Vacuum Cleaner

I just bought the DC41 after my $250 Hoover literally fell apart over the span of 8 months. I had scoffed at Dyson for years and scoffed again when they introduced the ball. But the reviews were good and I was fed up after the weak performance of my last two vacs. I figured that, based on my last decade's experience, the 5 year warranty pretty much guaranteed I won't be any worse off.
So I brought the thing home and put it together. I don't appreciate having to puzzle over the pictographic instructions with hardly any text---but for all that, the design is clever and assembly is quite simple and only takes a few minutes.
So what do I think? It sucks. No, I mean, it REALLY sucks. This vac is as powerful as the Kirby I had growing up (and at maybe a third the weight). But better yet, this is BY FAR the easiest unit I have ever used. It is easy to push, easy to pull, and turns to short that I can easily twist it around corners and completely eliminate having to walk around some pieces of furniture to get to the other side. No kidding. That goofy ball really works.
Down sides? I haven't found any. The design is ingenious. The handle IS the extension rod. As a result, this thing can be used to vacuum ceiling fans and bathroom events while sitting on the floor. The air hose is extra wide--less prone to blockage. The unit automatically switches between floor and wand operation. The switch to turn off the beater bar is up on the handle--you don't have to bend over or feel for a foot switch. The cyclonic collection can is the same size as the old Hoover and must be emptied just as often (after every room if you have a shedding dog) but on the Dyson, this is super easy--the same button that releases the can also opens the bottom when you go to dump it into the trashcan (and it will not dump accidentally--don't worry).
It's made plastic (and presumably composites), but compared to the last three vacs I've bought over the years, it feels the most solid by far. The only complaint I could imagine anyone having is that the cord does not retract. However, I hated that "feature" on Hoover I just tossed. It always took longer to pull out the retracted cord than just to unhook the coiled cord from the handle, and my children frequently neglected to pull it all the way out, causing the cord still on the coil to get VERY hot. So I'm glad the Dyson doesn't have it.
This is the best vac I'm ever owned, bar none. And for that, honestly, the money is well spent....Dyson DC41 Vacuum Cleaner
I have been using 2 different vacuums in my home for a number of years
... a Kirby, to do the carpeted portions of my home, and a Bissel V to
do the tile floors throughout my greatroom, utility room, and bathrooms.
The Bissel recently lost it's suction power, so it was going to be
time to get a replacement. After reading a number of reviews and being
an "old foggie" type person, I decided to replace the Bissel V (and
possibly the Kirby as well) with the more traditional style of Dyson's
line of vacuums, the DC28 model. I placed the order late in the
afternoon on September 5th, and frankly was very surprised that it
arrived this MORNING, Sept. 7, 2012, using Amazon Prime, which was well
less than 48 hours after I placed the order. What a pleasant surprise,
for my introductory use of Amazon Prime! After unpacking it and putting
it together (which was very easy to do,) I first vacuumed the carpeted
floors in my home - bedrooms and hallway - and was very pleasantly
surprised at the suction power it has - considerably more than my Kirby
has, which now I am going to donate to my church, as it will do a better
job than what we're using there at this time. As mentioned in other
people's reviews, the canister needs to be emptied quite frequently, but
it is very easy to do, and immediately I noticed the air in the house
was better than before. After vacuuming the carpeting, I did the tile
floors - greatroom and bathrooms - and it did an excellent job, even
picking up little stones that came in on the feet of my two Miniature
Schnauzers. So, although this is only Day 1, from what everyone else
says, I fully expect to be very satisfied with my new DC28 for many
years. I would recommend this vacuum to anyone who prefers the "old
style" vs. Dyson's new "Ball technology style" vacuum, although saying
this, keep in mind this DC28 is quite heavy and not self-propelled, so
you certainly get a good workout after vacuuming 650-700 square feet of
carpeting - which I consider to be another PLUS! ...Dyson DC28 Animal Upright Vacuum
